WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The 14th annual Strut for Kidz Race, a fundraiser to benefit children with cancer in the Cape Fear area, is set to take place Saturday at Long Leaf Park in Wilmington.
“We’re so excited about the race,” Allen said . “We have a 5K, we have a one mile fun run, and then of course the big famous fabulous Flamingo Foam Party.”
The race will start with registration at 8 a.m., followed by a one mile fun run/walk at 9 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30 a.m. Allen said that the event is made possible by the generous support of Old North State Bank Wealth Management, which is the presenting sponsor.
“All the proceeds from this benefit Children’s Cancer Partners, which in turn benefits children in the Cape Fear and their families who have cancer,” Allen said. “We’re a two-state organization, but everything we raise in each of the communities stays local. So this year, we will support over 100 children in the Cape Fear area who are battling cancer. Those kids have to travel in excess of 100 miles each way for treatment.”
For those who cannot make it to the race, Allen said that donations can be made on the Children’s Cancer Partners website.
“The funds are coming from this community,” she said. “We’ll still be right, we invested right back in. We track every child to the zip code and the funds that come into the zip code and everything is just, you know, we’re a small organization, we’re having a really big impact.”
The Flamingo Foam Party, which was held for the first time last year, is expected to be a highlight of the race.
“To see these kids, to see the kids who lost their hair come out and they’re out there and they’re having fun and they’re smiling, there’s nothing like that, joy,” Allen said. “And then of course everybody gets to have a good time. Adults too.”
Registration for the race is still open online and will also be open Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
